The First Transformers

The first Transformers did not come in a box from Hasbro. They were not mysterious robots that converted from corvettes and 18 wheel tractor trailers into mechanical bodies defending freedom. Optimus Prime, Ironhide and Sideswipe were not around when the original Transformers were created. It was over 200 years prior that the first transformers were created.   These early transformers are better known as Metamorphic or Mechanical furnishings.  

There were several pioneers in France during the 18th century who are credited with first developing convertible furniture that served multiple purposes.  During the 19th century, there were many more cabinet makers who constructed and produced these furnishing for the masses.  Perhaps the most popular achievement was the Metamorphic Arm Chair.
